In this 20-minute lesson (cut down from 30 minutes of in-class interaction), I introduce students to and help them practice using the Russian Verb of Motion заходить /зайти conceptually in its imperfective and perfective aspects, the preposition за to answer the question за чем? (integrating relevant vocabulary from the textbook unit), and the correspondence between time expressions and use of the past/present/future verb forms. The lesson is structured in three phases:
PHASE 1: Students practice creating grammatically and semantically accurate sentences based on their knowledge of the Welcome Back! video, with support from the instructor.
PHASE 2: Students watch several short online videos, answer informational questions, and then match pictures with prepared statements on Padlet (an online interactive platform) in order to help them contextualize aspectual use of the target verb forms.
PHASE 3: Students work in pairs to personalize their responses to three prompts, adding their answers in pictures and text to the interactive Padlet site using their personal digital devices. Grammar is reviewed and correctives are made in a meaningful communicative context.
NOTE: Any minor expressions of nervousness on the instructor's part derive from being videotaped during teaching for the first time, and from the fact that in this case she was teaching in another instructor's classroom and had not met the students beforehand. Also, students in this class gave their individual written permission to be videotaped for instructional purposes.
