Kaltura MediaSpace 01: An Introduction
From Group Media on November 17th, 2016
First and foremost, what is Kaltura MediaSpace? Kaltura MediaSpace is a database server platform designed to record to, host, store and recall all video assets and their associated metadata.
MediaSpace can be accessed as a standalone website or from within Canvas. Whichever way you choose to access it, you are looking at the same information and the same videos. If you make a change in one place, it will also show up in the other.
To access the Kaltura MediaSpace webpage you will need to enter the URL HTTPS://IU.MEDIASPACE.KALTURA.COM into your web browser. This will take you to the homepage for IU’s MediaSpace platform.
The first thing you must always do, to access or create your content, is to log in. In the upper right corner, click “Guest” button to open a drop down menu. At the end of the list, you will see a button that says “login”. Anyone with an IU account is able to access MediaSpace and Kaltura. Click “login” link and input your IU user credentials. You now are logged in and are able to access a variety of functions within MediaSpace.
Before we get into discussing specific functions of MediaSpace, it’s important to become comfortable with the layout of the website and to understand what each tab means.
On the homepage, you’ll see a series of tabs at the top: Home, Campus, IU Media, Public Media, Channels and Help.
The “Campus” and “IU Media” tabs allows you to search through a variety of content across IU campuses and departments. You can find anything from professor lectures to IT Training tutorial series. Take some time to explore and see what you can find!
On the text tab, “Public Media” displays content uploaded publicly to the database by various users. Private and unlisted content will not be found under this tab. You may also explore options on how to sort through the public media by selecting what kind of content you specifically want to see. For example, if you are looking for video presentations only, selected “video presentations” under the “view all media” menu.
“Channels” is where you can find videos organized into channels and categories. If you’re looking for something specific, be sure to use the search bar above where the videos are displayed. Underneath this tab also lists an option to create a new channel, but we’ll talk more on that later.
If you need further information on MediaSpace the “Help” tab will open a new browser window with written information about Katura at IU and resources to contact with questions.
