In the context of academic research, plagiarism may
often appear as an abstract concept to first-year composition students. When
students struggle to understand the meaning of plagiarism, it damages their
progress in elementary composition in several ways. First, it hinders students
from fully understanding the research and publication process, as well as the
need for expert opinions. Second, it keeps students from properly engaging in
citing sources. And finally, it results in poor writing performance in
first-year composition, which many students unfortunately already find
difficult. This project aimed to meet students in a place where they already receive
and disseminate information. In order to facilitate greater understanding of
what plagiarism is, as well as the ramifications, this project uses real-world
examples of plagiarism in social media to bring familiarity to students. The
presentation will explain the gap in understanding for first-year students, the
examples used in a first-year class, and finally reveal the overall impact of
the lesson. The study involved multiple courses in which a pre-assessment was
given to test awareness of the concept. After the lesson, an additional
assessment revealed successful outcomes. These results will also be discussed
during the presentation.
