Disparate Types of Excess: Investigating the Accumulation of Excess Credit Among Bachelor’s Degree Earners

In this presentation, we share our research findings from a study of ECH using the degree audit data of 12,461 bachelor-degree earning students at a large, public university in the Midwest (MidU). To better understand ECH and student course-taking, we differentiate between 1) inapplicable excess credit (IEC) that would never apply toward graduation because it is developmental, duplicated, or otherwise inapplicable to degree requirements; and 2) potentially applicable excess credit (PAEC) that can fulfill minimum credits toward graduation, but does not fulfill any major-specific requirements.
