Join Moirah Cooke, a dedicated art therapy graduate student at the Herron School of Art + Design, part of Indiana University Indianapolis, as she presents her groundbreaking thesis research in the captivating film, At the Table. This inspiring video explores the power of intergenerational art therapy, bringing together older adults (65+) with Parkinson’s disease and emerging adults (18-29) to foster connection, expression, and mutual understanding through art.
Moirah’s qualitative case study, conducted within a Parkinson’s support group, reveals how art therapy transcends generational divides, addressing challenges like social isolation, anxiety, and motor symptoms for older adults, while helping emerging adults navigate the stresses of independence and mental health. Through guided art sessions and heartfelt interviews, participants shared profound insights: art helps them be seen, understood, and connected. As one participant beautifully noted, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” especially when words are limited by disease.
At the Table showcases how intergenerational art therapy creates a space for dignity, empathy, and relationships, reducing isolation and building bridges across ages. Older adults find creative expression and companionship, while emerging adults gain empathy and real-world perspective. This research, part of Moirah’s graduate work at Herron (https://herron.indianapolis.iu.edu), highlights art’s transformative potential to unite and heal.
