Improving the pedagogy and revising the English language curriculum, especially within STEM-content areas, is a critical need for Kazakhstan’s higher education system. In 2021, ICIC received funding from American Councils for International Education to conduct a professional development program with lead English teachers from four Kazakhstani universities. Program aims included 1) increasing participants’ knowledge of today’s standards of curriculum development and pedagogy for English-mediated STEM classrooms; 2) improving teaching of academic English writing in STEM; and 3) developing networks to foster an enduring partnership between and among IUPUI and participating Kazakhstan universities. As a key part of this project, participating Kazakhstani educators virtually joined with IUPUI MA TESOL students enrolled in English for Specific Purposes and Materials Development. During the course, participants learned the theory and development of an ESP course as they designed their own viable courses for use in their contexts.
The current presentation will highlight an IUPUI student project inspired by the IUPUI-Kazakhstan collaboration. Diego Padilla Garcia-Moreno, a student in the ESP course, will share research from his study of Kazakhstan’s legal system and the development of his final project, a Pre-LL.M. ELS Program for the Republic of Kazakhstan. Matthew Hume, Assistant Director of the International Center for Intercultural Communication at IUPUI, and Lead Teacher for the IUPUI-Kazakhstan project, will share background information for the project’s development, along with some program specifics and participant outcomes, with special emphasis on the benefit to IUPUI students that such international collaborations bring.
This event is part of the Department of World Languages and Cultures’ International Lecture Series and is hosted as part of the 2022 IUPUI International Festival.
