Educating pre-service teachers, the practitioner
adjunct professor is a key lever to tie theory to practice in the current K-12
context. This presentation focuses on strategies, tools and practices infused
into teacher prep courses that provide a foundation for teaching through a lens
of equity and inclusion. Leveraging the policy, practices, tools, and
strategies of local school districts in which practitioner adjunct professors
are employed, this session will explore how this method will empower preservice
teachers, increase their employability, and contribute to building educator
pipelines that are reflective of the needs of urban school districts. As an
employee of this country’s 29th largest urban school district, Jefferson County
Public Schools has embarked on our District Commitment to Racial Educational
Equity Policy (09.131) for all students and created plans across five tenets:
(1) Diversity in curriculum, instruction & assessment; (2) School culture
& climate; (3) Programmatic access; (4) Staffing & classroom diversity;
and (5) Central office commitment to racial educational equity. Intentionality
in sharing this information and utilizing tools and strategies to support
implementation of equity and inclusion practices in concert with outlined
course requirements of schools of education amplifies the potential impact of
teachers to increase student achievement outcomes for all students
