Leveraging Google Sheets as a Teaching Tool for Zoom Breakout Rooms
In this session, the use of Google Sheets will be demonstrated as a teaching tool for groups in Zoom breakout rooms. Each breakout room is assigned a tab in a Google Sheet that takes students to the instructions and workspace for their group’s task. Instructors can easily observe the work of many student groups at the same time by clicking on different tabs in the sheet. Simultaneously, instructors can join different breakout rooms and use the information in the sheet to facilitate work and discussions in the groups. Completed sheets can be shared in Zoom to support group presentations. Since students use their IU email address to sign in to the Google Sheet, their engagement in completing the sheet can be traced and used for assessment purposes. Several examples of group tasks will be shared, ranging from discussing business cases, practicing research skills, and creating affinity maps. The scalability of Google Sheets and potential pitfalls that instructors and students might encounter will also be discussed.
