Indiana University will celebrate The Media School with a formal inauguration of the new school and dedication of a sculpture of World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle during Homecoming Weekend Oct. 17.
The new school was established July 1, combining the former School of Journalism and departments of Telecommunications and Communication and Culture to prepare students for careers in journalism, film studies, communications, research and other forms of media. The new school is within the IU College of Arts and Sciences. Programs and degrees will be in place by fall 2015.
Alumni also will have a first glimpse of the Pyle sculpture, which will be situated near Franklin Hall. The sculpture was created by artist Tuck Langland, who also designed the Herman B Wells sculpture in the Old Crescent. Langland used archival photos of Pyle to guide his design.
The sculpture will give Pyle, an IU journalism alumnus who won a Pulitzer Prize for his columns from the front, a prominent position on campus.
The celebration will feature remarks by IU President Michael McRobbie, Provost Lauren Robel and College of Arts and Sciences Executive Dean Larry Singell. The IU Jacobs School of Music Jazz Ensemble will entertain.
