All Indiana University elementary literacy and special education courses, field experiences, and student teaching must teach only state-approved science of reading methods. As such, all elementary licensure eligible teacher candidates must have opportunities to learn and practice how to teach phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
This module contains a video overview of the principles of the science of reading, a video that details the science of reading “look fors” as you observe our teacher candidates, and other materials that will help you support our efforts to ensure that elementary candidates are able to practice science of reading methods.
The first video in this module provides an overview of how mentors and supervisors can support teacher candidates in delivering effective, evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with the Science of Reading and emphasizes the role of feedback and observation in fostering essential literacy practices.
