Through contemporary African American art, Past is Present explores the legacy of slavery in Indiana and beyond. The exhibition includes contributions from Indianapolis-based and nationally renowned artists, displayed in dialogue alongside historical objects and documents. Paintings, sculpture, prints, digital projections, textile art, and several mixed media works will be displayed.
Past is Present: Black Artists Respond to the Complicated Histories of Slavery is curated by Jonathan Michael Square, Ph.D., assistant professor of Black visual culture at Parsons School of Design.
The exhibition is made possible by a generous grant from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation and The Indianapolis Foundation, a CICF affiliate.
