To respond to the emotional and cognitive needs of first-year students, we need to recognize and validate the variation in their preparedness for university. Creating a dialogue with high school teachers can foster effective learning spaces that ease the transition to college and maximize success for all students. The Decoding the Disciplines approach can provide a context for facilitating such communication and identifying common bottlenecks that interrupt a smooth transition to college.
