August Insights and Innovations: The American Community Survey (ACS) and Data on Disability

This session, presented by Lewis E. Kraus, MPH, MCP, Co-Director of the Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute, will provide an overview of the disability measures in the American Community Survey (ACS). We will cover what has been done with the data related to health planning and health equity. Finally, we will look at an example of the data for one Indiana county.

Lewis Kraus, MPH, MCP, is the Co-Director of the Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute.  Mr. Kraus is a national leader in local disability data and the inclusion of people with disability in health programming. Mr. Kraus is the author of the 2016 Disability Statistics Annual Report, the third successive Annual report.  He is leading the dissemination of local disability statistics for the federally funded Research and Training Center on Disability Statistics and Demographics (StatsRRTC). He is also leading the development and collection of community living measures for people with disabilities for the Community and Work Participation Disparities: A Program of the ADA Participatory Action Research Consortium (ADA-PARC) funded by NIDRR. Mr. Kraus as the lead author in the Report on the Applicability to People with Disabilities of the Guide to Community Preventive Services for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Mr. Kraus has Masters degrees in Public Health and City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley.
