College Staff Retreat | "Who Are We at Work? Contemplating Our Role in Sustaining an Inclusive Work Environment" - Rory James

If we want to achieve a sense of belonging as staff, we must unpack the overt and covert ways racism, sexism, ableism, and classism appear in the workplace. Ask yourself: What are the behaviors and practices shown in the work environment that exclude our colleagues, clients, and students? Conversely, how do we promote or show that we are working to create a welcoming and inclusive work environment? In this session, we will candidly discuss how tone policing, stereotyping, gatekeeping, and “weaponizing professionalism” are barriers to an inclusive workplace. We will also outline ways we can advocate for a more accepting workplace and workforce.

Bio: 

Rory G. James was the director of the Office of Student Diversity & Inclusion at IU School of Public Health-Bloomington until October 2022. Mr. James has 15 years of experience as a higher education professional. His background encompasses undergraduate and graduate student engagement and professional staff development in cross-cultural competency. Mr. James has presented at dozens of local, regional, and national conferences on diversity, equity, and access; bias awareness; masculinity and outreach to Black and Latino/x men; sexual health education; student retention programs; and health promotion.
