Recently, US President Donald Trump has called for an update and renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a 23-year-old trade agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Dr. Garcia joins us today to share his insights on the history of NAFTA and the implications updating NAFTA could have on the US and our closest trade partners, Canada and Mexico.
From the beginning, NAFTA has had its fair share of both critics and champions. However, predictions from both sides failed to materialize, and NAFTA’s lowering of tariffs and restrictions has actually led to widespread integration of industries across the three nations. Still, leaders in Canada, Mexico, and the US have indicated they are open to renegotiation, keeping what has worked and making much-needed updates to ensure the continuing competitiveness of the three countries.
