Using Course Data to Shape Narratives Around Effective Teaching
As student performance dashboards and other learning analytics products proliferate on college campuses, many institutions are considering more holistic approaches to their integration into faculty culture. While a “build it and they will come” approach to analytics dashboards may suffice for faculty members who are already aware of and interested in what their course data can tell them, others will benefit from context-based approaches that clearly frame dashboards as tools, not destinations. In this presentation, attendees will learn about an equity-inspired course analytics tool at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and examples of how the tool is being used in faculty development programming and departmental conversations about teaching. These efforts provide context for the stories that are being shaped by access to useful course data.
