Through the first destination survey, IUPUI discovered the gender salary gap appears right from the start with the first full-time job out of college. IUPUI Career Services staff conducted a follow-up study of graduates from the 2016-2018 cohorts to learn whether these alumni negotiated their first full-time job salaries, what factors influenced the decisions to negotiate, and what approaches they took to negotiating. This session will review findings from the survey, including differences by gender, race, age, and major of study. The session will also offer insight from national literature around the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the future of salary negotiation. Participants will engage in a discussion of intervention strategies, informed by the survey’s open-ended responses, which might better prepare future graduates to negotiate their first full-time job offers.
