What do you do when the adjunct scheduled to teach a
particular course is no longer available or interested in teaching the course?
In most cases, the director must quickly locate another adjunct and prepare the
person for teaching the course within a small window of time. Preparation to
teach with such short notice can take many forms, both good and bad. In some
cases, it may consist of a syllabus, books, class roster, and the location of
the classroom. In other cases, it may be online training, mentoring, and a
syllabus review. The most important thing is to support the adjunct in the
transition to teaching in higher education and to create a strong learning
environment for the students. Co-teaching is a model that requires the adjunct
to work side-by-side with an experienced faculty member while learning on the
job. The faculty member serves as a mentor for the adjunct and is listed as the
co-instructor in the actual course. It is experiential learning at its best.
