Abstract:
Managing Supply Chain Disruptions: A Case Study
There has been a growing interest in supply chain disruption and strategies for mitigating the risk within supply chains. The objective of my research is to explore the critical factors that influence a swift recovery from an unexpected and significant disruption in supply, specifically, how a buyer and supplier communicate and share information under the pressure of time. The pressure of time impacts trust between a buyer and supplier, influencing collaborative efforts and the sharing of sensitive information. The need for this research is based on the understanding that a firm’s success is directly tied to the performance of its supply chain.
The research methodology is a case study of multiple firms that experienced a disruption in supply and had to quickly respond. The study explores the source of disruption, impact on production, and collaborative actions taken to resolve the problem, followed by understanding lessons learned and long-lasting changes made within the firm. An emphasis was placed on how trust was established between the supplier, buyer, and customer, organizational culture, communication efforts, and swift knowledge transfer. Seven different firms were interviewed, from various industries. Interviewees were either the supply chain manager, engineering manager, or purchasing manager.
The study reveals an array of reasons for disruption. The impact was always costly, but customer goodwill and the firm’s reputation were never impacted. Lessons learned varied, but an overarching common thread is the trust that existed between the buyer and supplier, allowing for an effective resolution of the problem.
