At IU Bloomington, new members of Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) are elected
for membership to PBK in ceremonies that are held twice a year, in
December and April. Phi Beta Kappa is America’s oldest and most
prestigious academic honor society for students of the liberal arts. It
was founded in 1776, the same year the Declaration of Independence was
signed. PBK members include 17 U.S. presidents, 42 Supreme Court
justices, and more than 150 Nobel laureates.
