Mathematics and Success: A Study of Retention Strategies
Like most universities, IU often sees a broad spectrum of math competence in its student body. IU uses the ALEKS math placement exam to help inform students, parents and advisors about math preparedness and the particular path to completing the campus math requirement. Some of these students will be encouraged to directly enroll in a course that qualifies. Others will be told to first enroll in preperatory mathematics courses. And still others will elect to enroll in co-curricular help courses. These different paths to satisfying the math requirement are not equal, with some having more success (defined as a student graduating from IU) than others. Our research shows which of these various strategies have the greatest likelihood of success, thereby informing IU of a possible transformation in how we help and advise students.
