This session will provide participants insights and practical guidance on how to incorporate real-world role-play simulations that advance student learning beyond what textbooks and lectures can accomplish. Though the presentation will focus on courses related to negotiation, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution, targeted use of role-plays, in which students assume roles based on defined scripts, can be applied to multiple learning contexts to develop skills and strategies related to course content. Students often reflect on how role-plays are among the most impactful learning experiences in the course. This presentation will explain how to make the role-play experience safe, practical, engaging and fun. It will further explain the process for explaining, setting up, facilitating, and debriefing the role-play activity, and developing and assigning reflection papers on the experience tied to specific course expectations and modules. The session will provide specific examples of course weekly modules, related instruction, and role-play activities that connect to this learning. It will include a small role-play snippet for participants to experience. It will further include practical suggestions for encouraging students to engage in these activities without judgment or fear of making mistakes. The session will also provide tips for facilitating role-plays in both the classroom and online.
